BIOGRAPHY

Nick Stubblefield (born October 18, 1987 in New York City) composes, produces, performs and records music for live presentation, film, video, and dance. He grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, where he was recognized in the local media as a musical prodigy on piano. From age nine, he frequently performed publicly, distinguishing himself further as a percussionist and particularly adept user of electronic keyboards. He won a number of prestigious awards and scholarships.

By the age of 13, Nick was working as a pianist on weekends at the world class resort hotel and Spa, the Grove Park Inn. In 2003 he recorded and released independently his CD "Tried As An Adult." The album includes original compositions and covers recorded with the electronic keyboard overdubbed in various instrument voices, effectively creating the impression of jazz bands in various combos. It received glowing reviews in the press.

In 2004, still in high school, Nick formed the jazz trio "Spitfire," for which he composed a number of original jazz pieces. The prestigious Jazz Composers Forum debuted the combo at Asheville's hip venue, The Grey Eagle. The group played a variety of high profile events throughout 2004 through 2006.

During that same period, The International Jazz Festival Lapataia in Punta del Este, Uruguay, invited Nick to perform in January 2006, with jazz saxophone prodigy Alex Han of Scottsdale, Arizona.

Now a music composition major at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, Nick has composed a number of jazz pieces for piano and jazz combo, as well as chamber works, electronic pieces for dance, pop songs, and arrangements for church music. Having written the score for a professional documentary at age 13, recently he scored "Oakwood," an award-winning short comedy/horror film created by students at the University of Westminster, London, under the direction of Cey Sesiguzel. On that project he wrote, recorded, and synched the score, which included an original song used for the credits.

In September, 2007, Nick's composition "The Orphan Girl -- Nenneh" was presented as part of the gala re-opening of Aycock Auditorium, a newly restored performance hall on the campus of UNC-Greensboro. The event was attended by thousands of music lovers from the Greensboro community and beyond.

Nick has studied composition with Dr. Mark Engebretson, and Dr. Alejandro Rutty. He has studied piano with Dr. David Foster, Dr. John Salmon, and Mrs. Deborah Hollis.
